The Age Gap Report.
Evidence shows that workplace age discrimination is real but without mandatory reporting, we don’t know the full scale of the problem. What we do know is that our society is ageing, businesses risk skill shortages, and without reform, older workers and governments will face increased financial insecurity. We have the Gender Pay Gap Report that is helping close that gap, we can do the same for age discrimination.
Instead of ignoring these realities, we must face up to our changing society and shape a fairer solution. One that ensures businesses thrive, workers of all ages have equal opportunities, and the economy remains stable for future generations.
This is why Age 50 Ltd exists, to shine a spotlight on workplace age discrimination while there’s still time to make positive changes that benefit workers, businesses and policymakers alike.
The Evidence: Workplace Age Discrimination Exists.
More people aged 65+ than under 19—a turning point in demographics. The UK population is aging, with a growing proportion of people aged 65 and over.
One-third of workers aged 50+ believe they’ve been rejected from employment due to age. Research shows that 33% of over-50s in the UK fear they won’t secure another job due to age discrimination, with 15% explicitly rejected due to age.
Bias in hiring algorithms (ATS software) disproportionately filters out older applicants. AI-driven hiring tools have been found to reinforce biases, sometimes filtering out highly qualified candidates.
Countries that embrace older workers see stronger economic outcomes, yet the UK lags behind. The OECD reports that nations actively integrating older workers experience higher GDP growth and reduced economic dependency.
