Age discrimination is illegal under The Equality Act 2010 but can begin as early as 50 and earlier in some industries such as tech and finance. Skilled professionals, retail workers, and employees across different industries see their careers stall simply because of their age. As bias builds over time, job opportunities shrink, financial security is threatened, and workers are left struggling to maintain their livelihoods.

Why Age 50 Ltd Exists

Age 50 Ltd is the first campaign dedicated exclusively to ending age bias in employment, breaking barriers for older workers, and demanding real policy change. While others address age discrimination alongside broader diversity issues, we believe age bias needs a focused movement. 

Changing the Conversation About Age
in the Workplace

The UK workforce is aging, but workplace culture isn’t keeping up. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), there are now more people aged 60 and over than those under 19. This demonstrates why we need to update our attitudes to aging and stop excluding older workers, blocking promotions, limiting career opportunities, and shutting people out long before retirement. 

  • 1 in 3 people over 50 years of age believe they’ve been turned down for a job because of their age.

  • 77% of workers aged 51+ say age bias has directly impacted their employment status.

  • In tech, promotion rates drop sharply after age 36, proving age bias isn’t just about hiring, it kills career progression too.

For many people, bias starts small but by age 50, it’s a wall that prevents them from working, changing jobs or progressing in their careers.
